As a person doing much Route 66 photography, I observe that the Illinois towns which have been bypassed by the Interstate system are not as dowdy as those in the western states - hence, their antiquated buildings, signs and roads appear more "charming" than depressing. Probably this is because in the arid, desolate western states, the tiny towns' primary business was catering to interstate travelers, which of course was considerably reduced with the introduction of the Interstate highway system. llinois' small burghs fortunately also catered to farmers, metropolitan travelers and manufacturers.
