Making photographs of Route 66 pavement in Arizona in the summer is not easy work, I discovered. This piece, about 18x22 inches, looked too light, and so I decided to spray it with the only liquid I had in the car, Windex, to enrich the tones. The spray evaporated as quickly as it was applied. After about 10 minutes of spraying, the asphalt cooled to the point where it held enough moisture for the 30 seconds of photography.
